I fail as a blogger- beginning of Ron Hawkins – Buffalo write-up

April 30, 2009

I know I know I said I would fill this with some of my trip highlights but I kind of … keep forgetting….oops.

Ok let’s see how much I can write before I get logged out of the hotels computer.

I am in Toronto with Kristin whom I met when she came out to Australia last year to see Augie March. This time I flew to where she is and dragged her along to see Ron Hawkins. We saw him in Buffalo (New York State) last Saturday and are seeing him this Friday in St Catherine’s in Ontario.

His show was fantastic though unfortunately the sound wasn’t the best from the front of the stage. The words were muffled and the speakers sounded very crackly. Mind you my ears were ringing by the end of the night – damn it was loud.

It was so great to see Ron playing in front of an audience who knew him so well after seeing him as the support for Weddings Parties Anything in Australia and also seeing one of his solo shows in Melbourne where the audiences though appreciative didn’t quite have the enthusiasm shown by the crowd at Buffalo.

It was so great to see people ready to dance before he even started.

The support were Stephen Stanley and Carla McNeil in their new band Too Many Sisters.

Stephen Stanley is amazing to watch on stage. There is such an energy about him when he plays guitar, his whole body is involved in making music – quite mesmerising – I wish I could have captured it in a photo. It was almost as if he were wringing every last drop of music out of his guitar – incredible to see.

Carla was this ethereal woman with a stunning voice and her violin playing and sweetness (not a bad thing) was a great foil for Stephen on stage. I hadn’t heard any of their songs before but will definitely be buying their cd as soon as I get home (since the merch desk had packed up by the time I left the pub damnit).

OkI will write about the Ron Hawkins part of the gig next time.

Can I just say ……oh my god I LOVE Toronto. What a vibrant city full of energy and life (in contrast to Pittsburgh and Buffalo). I don’t want to leave here tomorrow.

Pittsburgh

April 25, 2009

A couple of photos of Kristin and I in Pittsburgh – Kristin came out to Australia last year to see some of the Watch Me Disappear shows by Augie March. We have almost demolished the entire packet of tim tams I brought over and are about to have vegemite for dessert.

I met a lovely man at a cafeteria who asked me if I was from England and when I said no I was from Australia he said oh well that is just an offshoot of there. On the plus side he did give me a free seafood thingy which luckily for anyone that is allergic to seafood actually has no seafood in it.

I am being followed by Augies!

April 23, 2009

Ok I told friends I would write brief updates in here about my holiday to the US and I thought it would be spectacularly un-Augie related however I was wrong.

I bumped into one Adam Donovan at the airport and we were on the same flight ha ha. I am starting to get a bit worried…rather than me following them maybe they are following me!!!!! (because of course at least in my own mind I am worthy of followers)

The flight was cool, I watched three movies so my eyes are still crossed! Slumdog Millionaire, The Boy In Striped Pyjamas (fantastic) and something else which I chose purely because it had Colin Firth in it.

The person at the hotel here let me check in 6 hours early – what a good start to my time in the US. Have to love hotel rooms with king size beds!!!! I can sleep any way I choose and still not have my feet hanging off the bed (and yes peanut gallery I know I am short damnit!!!)

Info about the support acts for the On The Quiet tour

blog-pic7

I didn’t get around to doing this earlier……

Emily Ulman was the support at Belgrave

Luluc were the support at Hepburn Springs and one of the Toff

Grand Salvo (unfortunately I missed this act) – played at the second Toff show

The support for the third Toff gig in Melbourne was Laura Jean

Ned Collette was the first Sydney support

Sarah Kelly (and her band mates) from the Red Sun Band was the support for the second Sydney gig

Andrew Morris was the support for the final Sydney show and the Newcastle one

The Nickson Wing were the first band who played at the Newcastle gig

I am off on holidays on Wednesday (yeah I know, it’s a hard life!!) so I might try and write a few notes when I am in the US – I am going to see two shows by a singer – Ron Hawkins that came out here last year as the support for Weddings Parties Anything which I am looking forward to plus I will be catching up with the two friends who came out here last year to see Augie March – Kristin and Jami – woohoo

ps. hmmm I haven’t been able to find any web links to The Arnold Horns – damn.

Without a will, without a prayer, without a passionate song to sing…

April 14, 2009

blog-pic6

This title is a line from the song Sunset Studies off the album of the same name. This tour it felt to me as if the band were energised and had regained some of their passion for their music which truthfully seemed to be missing at some of the gigs I saw for the Watch Me Disappear tour. I have seen shows by them where it appears that they are going through the motions and even though their music can stand alone it is such a joy to see them enjoying themselves on stage with each other and with the audience once more. i sometimes get a sense that there is some ambivalence from some of the band about live shows and touring – almost as if it is a necessary evil however that wasn’t apparent during these shows for the most part.

This is going to be some of my thoughts about the On the Quiet tour which I am thankful I got to see in it’s entirety. This was an opportunity in my life that I knew would not come around again – to see an entire tour (DC it was great to share this honour with you – though I guess you don’t want me to remind you about you missing Rich Girl when you were getting Glenn a drink- I think this was at the Hepburn Springs show). Damn I am glad they had a relatively small tour!!

I am loving the new version of One Crowded Hour more and more each time I hear it and more importantly, it looks like the band has regained their enthusiasm for playing this song. In fact with a number of songs they really do seem to be enjoying themselves on stage. Of course Dave always seems to be having a great time on stage but he wasn’t alone and on this tour we got to see the others also having fun with the songs.

The songs that most surprised me were the songs from Watch Me Disappear. They sounded more vibrant and energetic. They seemed quite different to the album versions and personally, I feel this can only be a good thing. This stripped back reworking of those songs meant that the focus was forced back on to the songs themselves and whilst it could have showed them up to be poorly written music and lyrics instead it showed how powerful these songs can be when played the way Augie March wants to perform them.

I mentioned in one of the early blogs for this tour that I finally ‘got’ Pennywhistle. I needed to hear it played the way they played it on this tour to see the beauty in this song. This had totally escaped me from my many listening to the album and also the shows last year when the band were touring the album.

Sunstroke House, Rich Girl, Little Wonder and Heartbeat and Sails again highlighted just how fresh the older Augie March songs can and do sound. It has been wonderful to hear these songs played with such passion and emotion by the band. Ken’s trumpet (Ken Gardner, Arnold Horns) during Little Wonder always put a smile on my face when he played – just beautiful.

There Is No Such Place and Train – what can I say, these have been staples of Augie March shows and they surprised us by again reworking these songs. Again these really worked for me during this tour. It is great to see a band step away from not only their own but the audiences comfort levels …. I never would have thought that I could love this version of Train as much as the original one which used to leave me drenched in sweat from dancing at gigs but I do.

And of course I have to single out Stranger Strange as the stand out song for the entire tour. I didn’t hear a bad version of it. It kind of scares me to realise that the Arnold Horns (in varying amounts) were possibly not originally planned to be a part of this tour as I now cannot imagine this song without Matt Habben’s haunting sax solo- it truly was heartbreaking in it’s beauty. This really HAS to be released on a cd at some stage.

Interestingly for me it was the songs from Moo You Bloody Choir that I had the most trouble understanding on this tour. Apart from One Crowded Hour which I mentioned earlier as having loved, Baron of Sentiment and Cold Acre generally left me feeling ambivalent during the gigs. I fully acknowledge that these are two songs that will never be my favourites however Pennywhistle was also in that category until I heard it played in a way that connected with me. It’s all good though as they were often two of the most popular songs judging from the audiences reactions. Bottle Baby was fantastic to hear a couple of times as well.

Their choice of Days by The Kinks as the cover song to include this tour was genius. By the end of the tour Augie March had made this song their own. In my mind Days was Ed and Adam’s song- they owned it musically.

What else were the highlights for me – of course how could I forget…. the backing vocals!!!!! OH MY GOD – at the risk of sounding like Ed’s very own one person fan club can I just comment on the lovely tone in your voice. To hear him, Dave and Adam clearly as they sang was an absolute gift for the audience.

All of the band seemed to push themselves during this tour …. Adam attacked the lap steel and forced it to sing to us, Kiernan’s prowess on any instrument he picked up and his obvious pleasure in creating music is amazing to watch and to be honest at times it felt almost as if I was intruding on his own private party (is it only me that feels as if I am a voyeur when watching him?). Ed – yes of course his bass playing is fantastic however as mentioned before it was his voice that captivated me this time around. Dave as always I feel that he is the one who keeps the band playing as a band. He is always watching the others and often gives a grin or smile to them, almost as if he is forcing them to connect with him on stage. And as for Glenn – as I have said in previous blogs this tour his voice is sounding better than I have heard it in a while but the most enjoyable thing this tour was seeing how (apart from one night….hmmmm now which could that have been ….coughs, Sydney first show) he bantered with the band and the audience. Rather than it seeming to be an uncomfortable experience he seemed to actually enjoy many of these interactions.

My favourite shows were the second shows from both Melbourne and Sydney and the Newcastle gig.

I am going to try and put some links up to the support bands in the next few days as well. I should have done that earlier but to be honest never thought about it.

And finally a big thank you to everyone who came up at shows and said hi to me and said that they had read my ramblings here and also thank you for the comments people have made on here. I freely admit that this whole blogging thing is not something I ever thought I would do and especially never thought I would be blogging about Augie March. The attention has been at times ….. interesting (ha ha) and I hope that for the most part people are enjoying reading about my personal opinions on the shows I see.

Mel

ps. I am trying to think about what else to add to the blog in between gigs so if anyone has any ideas or contributions let me know. I will be contacting a few of my artistic/musical friends to see if I can link to some of their Augie – related things.

Newcastle photos slightly late 4.4.09

April 10, 2009

blog-pic5

I am trying to think of a good excuse for my tardiness in putting up these photos….. would you believe the dog ate my memory card????? No? Damn ….. ok I confess I am suffering a severe case of I can’t be bothered doing anything that involves more than breathing in and out at the moment but I got myself out of this long enough to download the photos and balance my bank statement things ….. ok now back to being extremely lazy. :)

The photos seem very grainy…. I’m not quite sure what that is about. More than likely I pressed the wrong setting thingo on my camera. Though can I also add that the darn dim lighting at some of the shows is a pain. Yes yes we all understand that it isn’t comfortable being bathed in huge spotlights guys but we do want to see your luminous visages!!

Kiernan

Kiernan

I have come to the conclusion that Kiernan always looks good in photos because on stage it is as if he is totally lost in the music and he is barely aware of anything around him (apart from that second show at The Basement in Sydney) and this really shows in photos of him on stage.

Your eyes do not deceive you…. Adam is ….. smiling!!!! He had some fans in the front of him at the gig.

Apologies again for the graininess of the photos, I really must sit down with the camera manual one day!!! I have a couple more posts I want to add related to the On The quiet tour which I will do over the next week.

I hope that anyone who is going to the Bendigo show tomorrow has a good time. I would have loved to have gone as it is such a great line up of performers but need to stay put as I go on holidays soon – yay!

quick note

April 6, 2009

I just wanted to say that I still have a couple more photos from Newcastle to upload and a few other thoughts about the On The Quiet Tour to add when I have a chance.

I am still on a high from seeing so many fabulous shows by the band.

A vision of the future looking more than just okay,

April 5, 2009

Title taken from Pennywhistle from the last album Watch Me Disappear.

The Newcastle audience were one of the best audiences of the tour if not the best!! They were loud, enthusiastic and having a good time. Well apart from the person behind me who got aggro at some other guy next to him who had been dancing to Cold Acre and yelled loudly “This isn’t a Pentecostal church you know!” Ha ha you have to love it. But for the most part they were very friendly and I got to talk with a very interesting guy who stood next to me during the gig (I’ll hunt up that book you mentioned)

The band seemed relaxed on stage, maybe relieved to know that this was the last gig of the tour. Glenn was able to laugh off glitches, at one time or another all of the band seemed to share grins with each other ….. a marked contrast to one or two of their shows this tour when they barely acknowledged each other on stage.

The songs that to me have been sounding wonderful all tour continued to sound wonderful. Glenorchy Bunyip has been such a great song to start with though I had my reservations about this song as it was one of the songs that was a bit lacklustre on the album.

Dave was doing some mad drumming and for once I was close enough to be able to see him clearly. He is fun to watch as he drums with such passion and feeling. At various times during the night whilst drumming he would have a big smile from ear to ear …. it really is special to be able to see someone enjoying themselves so much.

Lupus and Farmer’s Son again sounded lovely. I really do like that they included these two songs each night and look forward to finding out more about the release of Farmer’s Son. Details guys details…..

Last night’s Little Wonder was fantastic as was Heartbeat and Sails.
Actually the entire show was fantastic. If I had to choose the best gigs this tour I would say that the Saturday at The Toff, Thursday at The Basement and then the Newcastle gig were the standouts

I got to have a chat to some more Augie March fans which is always cool and also caught up with Jim from the yahoo list. He was at his 84th Augie gig!!!!!! He had gone to the last two Sydney shows as well so he got to see three really good shows by the band. (by the way sorry I didn’t get to say goodbye Jim, I couldn’t see you when I left)

I am writing this as I train it from Newcastle to Sydney, it is a very scenic trip as a few people had mentioned so I am thankful that I extended my trip to include this gig. It’s been a bit of a bumpy few days for me nonetheless I am really pleased I decided to add the Newcastle show to my trip.

I have some photos from here and also the last Sydney show that I will put up in the next day or so and maybe a tour wrap up ….and maybe some other thoughts…. ha ha, as if I could run out of things to say.

Setlist 4th April 2009 Newcastle

April 5, 2009

blog-pic4
Augie March had two support bands for the last show of this tour.
(DC can you please let me know the name of the first band …The Mix or something)

The first band had a large group of fans at the front of the stage who danced and sang along to all of their songs which was fun to watch. They were excellent with three of the members taking the microphone for songs which was interesting as they all had quite different singing styles and voices. An excellent start to what I was hoping would be a good night.

Second was Andrew Morris. His music is lovely to listen to and once again a number of people in the front rows knew his songs and had come to see him with Augie March being the bonus. I enjoyed his performance much more at this show however that may be because I now could recognise some of his songs. There is something very gentle about him (hope that doesn’t sound too new age-y but it’s true)

Augie March came on to the stage and it took a few moments for the audience to realise they were there. Once again they had brought along two of the Melbourne based Arnold Horns (Matt Habben and Ken Gardner).

1. Glenorchy Bunyip – with Matt
2. Lupus
3. Farmer’s Son – Matt and Ken
4. Sunstroke House
5. Little Wonder with Matt and Ken
6. One Crowded Hour with Matt and Ken
7. Pennywhistle with Matt and Ken
8. Stranger Strange with Matt. Glenn dedicated this to DC for his hard work during this tour.

The debate afterwards was did Glenn describe DC as the interim or intern manager?? Either way DC has done a fantastic job of getting them all to the shows, getting some great venues for the band to play in this tour, preventing them from killing each other (on stage and off) and always having a smile and a hug for people. You are a good man Charlie Brown! end of random compliment :)

9. Cold Acre with Matt and Ken
10. Baron of Sentiment with Ken and Matt, Glenn not playing an instrument
11. The Slant
12. There Is No Such Place with Matt and Ken
Encore
13. Heartbeat and Sails – I liked how Kiernan casually strolled on part-way through the song. I thought that maybe they were going to try a new version without him!!!!
14. Days (a cover of a Kinks song)
15. Train – with Glenn, Kiernan and Adam

will add some more later
